Heather Dickinson

I have been illustrating since the 1980’s including children’s picture books, folk tales, fairy tales, school books and reading materials.

Since childhood I have loved writing stories and turning them into tiny picture books. In 2009 I completed an MA course in author/illustrated picture books at the University of Central Lancashire. While on this course I entered the Macmillan prize, a children’s book competition, and came highly commended with my picture book,” a mermaid on my hand”.

My work is influenced by a love of colour, European fairy tales and early Renaissance paintings. But the main influence is children themselves, having spent many years visually recording children of picture book age (including my own) in many sketch books. This resulted in a very visual dissertation for my MA course – “Drawing children of picture book age for illustration and character development”. I illustrate in full colour and black and white, using watercolour, inks, coloured crayon and gouache.
